With the huge EW83D lens
hood on, this lens looks almost the same as the EF17-35mm
f/2.8L.
The Manual Focusing ring
on my test lens felt stiffer than what I am used to on my other EF
lenses. This is not exactly significant since I know that with more
use, this stiffness will disappear.
It focuses as close as
0.25m, which is extremely helpful in environmental shots in
physically-constrained locations.
The surprising thing
about the AF is that it "glides" into focus. By
comparison, the EF17-35mm f/2.8L seems to
"snap" into focus. The difference between AF speeds is not
as obvious as that between the EF100mm f/2 USM
and the EF85 f/1.8mm USM, but was obvious
enough to have caught my attention.
Attached to an EOS1n,
this lens felt well-balanced, and IMHO, was easier to manual focus than
the EF17-35mm f/2.8L since the MF ring is at a further distance away from
the lens mount. I especially liked the thick (1cm) MF ring.
Conclusion? Get
this lens if you need quality at wide angles and you need the large f/1.4
aperture. Otherwise, the several times cheaper EF24mm
f/2.8 might be the one you are looking for.
